In December we moved house from our big house on ECR (Chennai) to a flat on the fourth floor above an American Diner. There were so many reasons for moving but the main ones were:
- I was five months pregnant and we lived out in the middle of nowhere - a long way from the hospital;
- At our new flat, not only were we close the hospital, but we had friends right downstairs and there are people in the restaurant 24/7;
- The flat very rarely has power cuts or water shortages (unlike the house we were in).
It made sense to move because with the baby on the way, it was just too difficult at the house with power cuts etc and we had no idea what time of day I would go into labour and it could've taken over two hours to get to the hospital if it was during rush hour. As it turned out, I was 25.5 hours in labour (from start to finish) so we had plenty of time to get to the hospital anyway :)
The hardest part about moving was getting all our stuff from the house to the flat. We hired a van and some men to move it all, but I had to pack it all up. Plus, we did a few loads in the car (about three trips, I think). It was crazy and I remember the rain! The movers couldn't come and the initial agreed time cause the roads were just flooded!
My most vivid memory of our move was on reaching the flat (with a car load of stuff), the lift wasn't working and we had to carry boxes, suitcases, bedding, piano music all up four flights of stairs! It was wet, hot and exhausting! But, we made it!
